How to Build an Acoustic Diffuser

Why Build Your Own Diffuser?
Commercial acoustic diffusers range from $200 to $800 per panel, and a typical studio needs several. Building your own cuts costs by 60-80% while giving you control over dimensions, aesthetics, and wood species.
This guide covers both CNC and hand-tool construction methods. If you have access to a CNC router, you can build a professional QRD diffuser in an afternoon. Without CNC, a skyline (stepped) design is more practical and achieves similar acoustic results.
Materials Overview
Wood Selection
MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard)
- Most common choice for diffusers
- Stable, flat, machines beautifully
- Affordable ($25-40 per 4×8 sheet)
- Takes paint well
- Cons: Heavy, edges swell with moisture
Baltic Birch Plywood
- Premium appearance with natural wood look
- Excellent dimensional stability
- Higher cost ($60-100 per sheet)
- More forgiving of edge moisture
- Ideal for clear-coat finishes
Hardwoods (Oak, Walnut, Maple)
- Highest aesthetic quality
- Most expensive option
- Best for solid-wood skyline designs
- Requires careful moisture management
Hardware and Supplies
- Wood glue (Type II or III for durability)
- French cleats or Z-clips for mounting
- Sandpaper (120, 180, 220 grit)
- Finish of choice (paint, stain, polyurethane)
- Router bits (1/4" or 3/8" straight or spiral upcut for CNC)
Method 1: CNC-Routed QRD Diffuser
Equipment Needed
- CNC router (Shapeoko, X-Carve, or similar)
- Workholding (clamps, screws, or vacuum table)
- Dust collection
- CAM software or pre-generated G-code
Step-by-Step Process
1. Generate your design
Use our diffuser designer preview to create your QRD pattern. Enter your target frequency and available panel dimensions, then bring the calculated well depths into your own CAM software to generate G-code for your CNC platform. 2. Prepare your stock
Cut your MDF or plywood to the final panel dimensions. Ensure the material is flat. Warped stock causes uneven pocket depths.
3. Secure the workpiece
Clamp or screw the panel to your spoilboard. For screw mounting, place screws outside the cutting area or in wells that will be pocketed to full depth.
4. Set your parameters
Typical settings for MDF:
- Spindle speed: 16,000-20,000 RPM
- Feed rate: 80-120 inches/minute
- Depth of cut: 0.125" per pass
- 1/4" spiral upcut bit
5. Run the job
Monitor the first few passes for chatter or tool deflection. The operation typically takes 45-90 minutes depending on panel size and well depths.
6. Sand and finish
Remove machining marks with 180-grit, then 220-grit. MDF requires sealing before painting. Use shellac or sanding sealer.
Method 2: Skyline Diffuser (Hand Tools)
A skyline diffuser uses blocks of varying heights rather than routed wells. The acoustic principle is identical, but construction is simpler: cut blocks, arrange in pattern, glue to backing.
Step-by-Step Process
1. Calculate block heights

2. Prepare your blocks
Options for creating blocks:
- Table saw: Rip lumber to square cross-section, then crosscut to heights
- Miter saw: Most efficient for repetitive crosscuts
- Band saw: Good for smaller blocks
Accuracy matters. Blocks that are 1-2mm off will affect performance.
3. Sand blocks before assembly
It's much easier to sand individual blocks than assembled panels. Round the top edges slightly for a finished look.
4. Lay out the pattern
Mark a grid on your backing board. Dry-fit all blocks to verify the pattern before gluing.
5. Glue blocks to backing
Apply glue to block bottoms and press onto backing. Work in sections to prevent glue from setting before placement. Use spacers or a jig for consistent block spacing.
6. Clamp and cure
Use cauls and clamps to ensure full contact. Allow 24 hours for the glue to cure fully.
Finishing Options
Paint
The most common finish for MDF diffusers:
- Seal with shellac or sanding sealer
- Prime with high-build primer
- Sand lightly between coats
- Apply 2-3 coats of latex or acrylic paint
Clear Coat (Plywood/Hardwood)
For natural wood appearance:
- Sand to 220 grit
- Apply wood conditioner (for softwoods)
- Stain if desired
- Apply 2-3 coats of polyurethane or lacquer
Fabric Wrap
For a softer appearance:
- Stretch acoustic fabric over the panel
- Staple to the back
- Note: Thick fabric may slightly reduce high-frequency scattering
Mounting Your Diffuser
French Cleats
The strongest method for heavy panels. Attach one cleat to the panel back, one to the wall. The interlocking angle makes installation easy and secure.
Z-Clips
Similar principle to French cleats but lower profile. Good for lighter panels or when wall clearance matters.
Direct Mounting
Screws through the panel into wall studs. Practical but makes removal difficult. Countersink and fill the holes.
Common Problems and Solutions
Blocks falling off during assembly Use more glue and ensure surfaces are dust-free. Hot glue can tack blocks in place before wood glue cures.
Uneven pocket depths (CNC) Check for stock flatness and spoilboard leveling. Use a surfacing pass on the spoilboard before cutting.
Finish soaking into MDF edges Seal edges with wood hardener or thin CA glue before finishing.
Panel too heavy Consider using thinner backing material (1/4" instead of 1/2") or hollow blocks for skyline designs.
