- Best For. Primary applications: Broadcast studios, reception areas, modern interiors: Wave diffusers are chosen where visual design matters as much as acoustic performance. They can be tuned toward voice-frequency applications.
- Depth Profile. Typical range: 12-20 cm (5"-8"): The amplitude of the wave sets the maximum depth. Deeper profiles push the low-frequency planning limit down somewhat but require more material and space.
- Wavelength. Typical range: 20-60 cm (8"-24"): Spatial wavelength (distance between ripple peaks) affects frequency targeting, as a planning estimate. Shorter spatial wavelengths tend toward higher acoustic frequencies; longer ones toward lower frequencies.
- Visual Style. Profile options: Sinusoidal, compound, custom curves: Standard sinusoidal waves offer clean, predictable aesthetics. Compound waves (multiple frequencies combined) create more complex visual patterns.
- Frequency Focus. Planning range: Typically 500Hz - 4kHz: Frequency limits are planning estimates. The low limit is mainly constrained by depth (amplitude); the high limit is mainly constrained by surface curvature and element width. Exact performance depends on panel size, incidence angle, and measurement method.
- Material & Finish. Common materials: MDF, hardwood, acoustic fabric wrap: Wave diffusers can be painted, stained, or wrapped with acoustic fabric. The smooth surfaces allow for versatile finishing options.
How to Design a Wave Diffuser
- Choose placement and aesthetic goals. Decide where the diffuser will go and what visual style you want to achieve, smooth curves work well in modern interiors and broadcast environments.
- Select wave parameters. Choose wavelength and amplitude to balance visual flow with acoustic effectiveness. Longer wavelengths target lower frequencies.
- Set depth and dimensions. Typical wave diffusers use 12-20 cm depth. Adjust based on your frequency targets and available space.
- Choose wave shape. Select from sinusoidal, compound, or custom wave profiles based on your acoustic and visual requirements.
- Build and install. Use rigid materials with smooth finishes. Wave diffusers work well in painted MDF or acoustic fabric wrapping.
