What is a Stepped Diffuser?
Architectural Philosophy
Unlike mathematically-derived diffusers (QRD, PRD, MLS), stepped diffusers prioritize visual aesthetics and architectural integration. The "skyline" pattern creates dramatic shadows, depth, and visual interest reminiscent of urban cityscapes.
Stepped diffusers use discrete depth levels (3-7 steps typically) arranged in patterns that can be customized to match room aesthetics, branding, or even represent actual city skylines. Each step acts as a mini-reflector at different depths, scattering sound across a broad frequency range.
Modular Simplicity
The discrete step approach makes fabrication remarkably simple. Each depth level can be a standardized module, stacked plywood sheets, foam blocks, or 3D-printed elements. Assembly is straightforward: arrange modules according to the pattern.

How to Design a Stepped Diffuser
